Portrait can be overlaid on the same background that exists in a particular picture, a custom background from a separate source, it can be a plain background.  In this example we are showing a portrait that was created on a colored background with the subject overlaid on it.

A colored background is painted over the normal white canvas.  This color was chosen because it highlighted the skin color and casual effect of the photograph itself.
