A portrait of a person can be overlaid on the same background that exists in a particular picture, a custom background from a separate source such as another photograph, a non-copyright picture from magazine, etc., or it can be a plain background.  In this example we are showing a portrait that was created on a colored background with the subject overlaid on it.
