Portrait can be overlaid on the same background that exists in a particular picture, a custom background from a separate source, it can be a plain background.  In this example we are showing a portrait that was created on a colored background with the subject overlaid on it.

A colored background is painted over the normal white canvas.  This color was chosen because it highlighted the skin color and casual effect of the photograph itself.  The final custom original oil painting reflects the beauty and fun of the original photograph and captures it in a medium that can be displayed to the delight of everyone.
